The GWO Enhanced First Aid course is designed to give participants the knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide enhanced first aid to casualties within the wind industry, using advanced first aid equipment and medical teleconsultation. Participants will be given the skills to handle life-threatening, major, and minor injuries and medical conditions that may arise when working in a wind turbine environment, while consulting with a more advanced medical professional, in order to treat, stabilise, or prepare casualties for evacuation to a medical facility.​ The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a letter to industry via SafetyOn, stating that HSE considers that for a person in the wind industry to be fully first aid trained they must have completed the GWO Enhanced First Aid (EFA) course, or equivalent.

This course will cover: • The role of the first aider • Legislation surrounding the provision of first aid • Risks and hazards that can lead to first aid incidents • Anatomy and physiology of the human body • The primary survey and lifesaving first aid, including: • Dealing with dangers​ • Understanding levels of response and treating unconscious casualties • Catastrophic bleeding • Choking • CPR and the use of AEDs • The recovery position • Shock • The secondary survey including the head-to-toe examination​ and taking notes • Major and minor injuries and illness including: • Burns • Chemical Contacts to the Eye • Heart Attack • Stroke • Hypothermia • Fractures • Anaphylaxis • Asthma • Abnormal blood sugar • Bites and stings • Other serious injuries • Other serious illness • Managing large-scale incidents including preparing for medical evacuation • Medical teleconsultation • Pain management • Advanced emergency equipment including: • Oxygen • Bag-valve masks • Airway devices • Pelvic splints

Yes, this course does include the use of non-medicinal and medicinal pain relief in line with national legislation, and includes the use of Entonox and Penthrox. Participants will also learn and practice the ability to place a casualty into a stretcher of a type likely to be found on wind farms. However, the course does not cover the use of additional lifting and rescue equipment to raise or lower stretchers. If this is necessary for your organisation, you should also book GWO Advanced Rescue.

• You must be 18 or over to undertake this course • Participants must have a WINDA ID (to obtain a WINDA ID, participants can register for free here)(https://winda.globalwindsafety.org/register/) • You must complete a medical self-declaration before undertaking the training (this will be sent to you after you have booked) • You must be able to speak English to a reasonable level for course material comprehension and safety purposes • You must have an accepted form of photographic ID. • Participants will be assessed via a written test and their practical performance during assessment scenarios • This course is certified by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) • All participants will receive an electronic certificate uploaded to WINDA (https://winda.globalwindsafety.org/) • Certificates are valid for 2 years • Refresher courses must be completed no later than 1 day before the expiry date on your current certificate. E.g. if your current certificate expires on the 31st January, then your refresher course must be completed by the 30th January at the latest • If a refresher course is completed less than 60 days before the expiry date, the original expiry date is maintained

• All PPE required for the course will be provided, except for safety footwear • We do provide basic gloves, however if you would prefer to bring your own then please feel free to do so • Lunch is provided on most of our courses (the exception being if you are doing a course which begins later in the afternoon) • Unfortunately, we may be unable to cater for gluten and dairy-free, and certain allergies due to our suppliers • If you do have an allergy or food intolerance, please get in touch with us to discuss this before your course date
